The Sligo FRC Family Support Service employs four family support workers and three Community Employment participants to provide targeted home based support to families in their own homes in Sligo Town, North Sligo and North Leitrim.

Work undertaken during these visits vary from working with the parent on

  • basic kitchen/house hygiene,
  • preparation of nutritional meals,
  • dealing with refuse,
  • food shopping,
  • de-cluttering,
  • school attendance,
  • advising on issues in relation to children’s behaviour and other parenting issues,
  • introducing parents to social supports such as parent and toddler groups/swimming group, linking in with relevant mental health services,
  • supporting mothers with breast feeding,
  • financial issues,
  • welfare payments,
  • supporting children with homework,
  • English language,
  • emotional support to parents,
  • support to parents of children with additional needs,
  • working with children with additional needs,
  • working with teenagers,
  • early years development,
  • mirroring parenting,
  • supporting young mothers

The length of involvement depends on the individual needs of the family involved, it can be from three months to three years and more.

Family Support Workers also facilitate the Parents Plus Parenting Programmes, Non-Violent Resistant (NVR) Programme and the Decider Skills Programme to children (6th class) in the schools in Sligo Town, North Sligo and North Leitrim.
